Top 11 Reads of 2020

My goal in 2020 was to read 80 books. I bested that by 20 due to the quarantine, so there is a silver lining. Here are my favorites from this one-of-a-kind year.

  1. The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré

  2. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

  3. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

  4. The Guest List by Lucy Foley

  5. Wine Girl by Victoria James

  6. Rabbit by Patricia Williams

  7. Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner

  8. The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

  9. Educated by Tara Westover

  10. On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

  11. The Boy from the Woods by Harlan Coben

Share your favorite books that you read during 2020 with me! If I haven't read them I will add them to my list for next year.

I think I gave Wine Girl 3.5. I guess I put it on my list because it stuck with me. So subjective! Maybe I was in a mood that day. ;)

Yes, I agree, everyone has different criteria for rating books. For me, the writing has to be excellent. Surprises are always good, too... I really dislike if I see it all coming well before it does. It doesn't usually matter if I like all the characters if the writing is great, though an annoying character *can* take away from my rating. (What prompted me to ask you was because I didn't think you'd rated Wine Girl that highly, but here it is on your best-of list. ;) Oh, and I just re-counted and I've read 7 of your books. :)) As always, enjoy exchanging thoughts with you.

Everyone definitely has their own way of rating books. For me, a 5-star book has to be perfect. I get lost in the story, I love the writing, there are surprises. 4-star is pretty great, but lost me a bit along the way or had a subplot or character I did not enjoy. Most books are a 3 for me; enjoyable, but I usually see what is coming. 2-star or lower means I had to fight my way through. Thank you for sharing all of your books with me, I look forward to adding some of these to my never-ending TBR pile.

I've read six of your favourites...and loved them...so I obviously need to check out the others.

(BTW - I've seen your ratings, and wonder what you consider 5-star? I gave my top choices either 5 stars or 4 1/2)

My list is a bit longer - I've got 24...

Girl, Woman, Other - Bernadine Evaristo

Frying Plantain - Zalika Reid-Benta

The Water Dancer - Ta-Nehisi Coates

Bunny - Mona Awad
