The Soundtrack of Our Life

No matter what I am doing, my brain always plays a song to go along with what is happening in my life.

Sometimes that is annoying (I have been 'singing' the Game of Thrones theme for weeks), sometimes hilarious (I changed the lyrics to Harriet, Sweet Harriet throughout our entire San Francisco adventure), but more often than not it enhances my world. Since I met Spencer, that soundtrack includes a lot of piano music. I had enjoyed classical music in the past, but didn't know any details or have any real favorites in that arena. The Doc, thankfully, changed all of that.

When we talk about the soundtrack to our life together, the music that accompanies our great romance, we can contribute about 30 percent to composer Yann Tiersen.

Intrigued from Jump Street

When I first saw my future husband, it was in a video of him playing piano. I was so in awe of his talent. The first piece I saw was his interpretation of Lady Gaga's Paparazzi; the second was a piece by Yann Tiersen. I was so impressed with his piano playing ability, and I was happy to be introduced to a new (to me) composer.

Cinephiles

When we started dating, as all new couples do, we started sharing our likes: movies, music, sports teams, and always back to movies. Yann Tiersen did the music for a film called Good Bye, Lenin! (about the fall of the Berlin wall) and, most famously, the music for the movie Amelie. I absolutely adored the music in Amelie. (It should be noted here that after he shared Good Bye Lenin with me, I shared Hot Rod with him. I love that we watched two such different movies in one day and loved them both.)

Heading to a Wedding

One piece that Spencer always plays for me is called Comptine d'un autre été, l'après-midi. I have heard it literally hundreds of times; it makes my heart hurt, in the best possible way. When we got married in The Bahamas, I was able to choose my music as I walked down the (beach) aisle. It was a no brainer; I chose Spencer's rendition of this magical piece. He still plays it for me; I still yell out, "That's my jam" and hug him when he does.

A San Francisco Treat

Yann Tiersen is a French composer. He usually tours in Europe. This winter, he came out with a new album. Spencer was so excited to learn a new piece (Tempelhof) on his grand piano. We were beyond thrilled when he announced a tour including some dates in America. Residency was finally over, we had the ability to travel...could we possibly see our favorite composer live!?

Friends, dreams do come true. Last Saturday night (after spending the day with my brother Casey, who I hadn't seen for over three years) we saw Yann Tiersen at the Warfield in San Francisco. Let's just say I may or may not have cried through the first fifteen minutes. It was a dream come true day for sure.

We have lots of other songs that are 'ours', but no one artist quite as significant as this one.

Do you hear music all day, every day? Do you have a favorite band or composer that was a game-changer in the soundtrack of your life?
