Fun Fact: If The Doc had been born a gal, he would be known as Savannah, as opposed to Spencer. This can be an entertaining tidbit for a slightly sarcastic wife, from time to time.
This trip was six years in the making. Spencer (and I!) definitely earned a graduation trip. We had a quick weekend in Chicago when he graduated from medical school, then we were off to Atlanta. Residency offered not much pay and one day off per week; these conditions are not exactly suited for lovers of travel. So, after moving to a new town and starting a new job, The Doc found himself with ten days off.
In. A. Row.
We were giddy with excitement. What to do with this glorious gift of time?
Road Trip!
We kicked off an 8-day adventure in Savannah, Georgia. I cannot imagine a better way to begin a trip.
Hotel
When I walk into a hotel lobby and am greeted by cool art, champagne, and friendly folks, the outlook is good. Perry Lane Hotel (A Luxury Collection Hotel) may just be my favorite of all time. The rooms were so chic and clean. The bathrobes and slippers were beyond comfortable. The staff was amazing, and the location was perfection for all of your walking needs. (You can easily get to The Telfair Museums and E Shaver Bookseller, personal highlights from the area.)
The only two bummers were the Resort Fee (it was a chunk of change that included perks we never used) and the fact that I had to leave after only three days.
Sandwich
In 2012, Spencer and I watched a show called Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America. We drooled over all of the sandos and we loved the March Madness-style set up. For SIX YEARS we have randomly brought up the sandwich which eventually took second place in the nation.
Friends, sandwich dreams can come true.
What the show didn’t translate was how crazy cool and friendly the staff is here at Zunzi’s. They yelled warm and hilarious greetings to all passersby, gave us an insane amount of free samples when they found out we were first-timers, and offered us extra drinks and free popsicles because it was such a scorcher.
Cocktails
We ended every night at The Wayward. These are craft cocktails on crack, surrounded by artwork that we wanted to steal and the trip’s finest drank.
Eats
I had many restaurant suggestions and did much foodie research before hitting the squares in Savannah. The one constant that popped up everywhere was a gastropub named Treylor Park. So, after an afternoon horse-drawn carriage ride around the town (I loved this activity!) we walked over to Hitch (TP’s Drayton Street location). The interwebs and my foodie friends came through with flying colors. Chicken Pancake Tacos? Cocktails with gummy bears? Back to the Future on the screens? Definitely my kind of place.
Feel free to share your favorite places in Savannah with me. We can't wait to go back!
