Oh man I love award shows. I love all of the dresses and the jewelry and nervously sitting through the speeches. I practice who I would thank, and then remember my fear of public speaking. I am also a cinephile, so most years I see a good chunk of the nominees, and I cheer for my favorites like I am at a basketball game. It is pretty lame that there is no official host this year, but I am excited nonetheless.
Here is a quick look at my favorite Oscar memories and a few picks (and duds) for this upcoming Sunday.
Winning
My very favorite Oscar memory is from 2013. Spencer took me to Miami for my birthday. We went to a Cinebistro at The Dolphin Mall. They had a contest picking the winners. I like to say I was 'Meat Wasted', as this movie outing was after a trip to a Brazilian Steakhouse; I have no memory of actually making my picks. We saw Silver Linings Playbook (one of my all-time favorite movies, Jennifer Lawrence took home a statue for her perfomance) and I apparently killed the picks. I ended up winning a year's worth of movie tickets and free food.
My Bad
Spencer was knee deep in residency during The Oscars of 2017. That means that he was working insane hours and would usually fall asleep before his head hit the pillow. He was so out of it I would often lay in bed next to him and watch tv or read; he could have slept on a busy street he was so tired. I promptly shook him and woke him up when Moonlight was announced as the best picture after they had mistakenly called up La La Land for the win. It was a shocking moment and I bet there are so many more safety nets in place now.
Them Apples
I loved the movie Good Will Hunting way too much. I loved the story and I loved that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck had such a great behind-the-scenes friendship. I think it made us all feel like we could write a movie with our best friend and become rich and famous. When they won for best original screenplay in 1998 I was over the moon.
And the award goes to...
Here are the best picture nominees for 2019:
Black Panther BlacKkKlansman Bohemian Rhapsody The Favourite Green Book Roma A Star Is Born Vice
We have seen all but two (I have heard nothing good about Vice and I am trying to get to The Favourite soon). My favorite, hands down, was Green Book. I also loved BlacKkKlansman.
The book was amazing, Spike Lee did a great job directing, and I adored the cast: John David Washington (Denzel's son) and I heart Adam Driver. Black Panther was a truly great comic book movie, but I'm not sure it deserves the best picture award. I enjoyed Roma a lot more than I thought was possible. I think it takes home the prize. Of course if Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper win, I will cry. And sing Shallow, loudly and poorly. I love me some Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. She also might say something crazy, which is also why I watch.
I think two older actors might get the 'throw them a bone' Oscar this year: Glenn Close and Willem Dafoe. The Wife made me want to punch myself in the face; Dafoe looked exactly like van Gogh, but At Eternity's Gate was beyond a strange flick.
