At the beginning of this NBA season, The Doc's favorite player moved to Los Angeles. Spencer has followed LeBron James' career for many years. When LeBron takes his talents elsewhere, Spencer follows. We thought it would be fun to see King James during his first season as a Laker. ( I have a hard time cheering for the Lakers, my Dad was a huge Celtics/Bird fan when I was growing up, that purple and gold makes my teeth grind.)
Our travel dreams include visiting all 50 states; we cross-referenced off weeks with no plans vs. LeBron's road schedule on this half of the country. So, way back in September, we bought tickets to OKC. I love Russell Westbrook and we figured it would be a good match up in a city we had never been to.
Hoops
Our best intentions were foiled by an injured groin. LeBron didn't even make the trip. We did our best to shake off our disappointment and enjoy what ended up being a great overtime game. The Chesapeake Energy Arena is solid, and Russell Westbrook is so much fun to watch.
Eats
We were in Oklahoma, which means we were on the hunt for fry bread. Growing up in Montana, I had my share of Indian Tacos with Fry Bread. Spencer had never heard of such a delicacy. I continue to try my best to introduce him to the finer things in life. Through the beauty of the Google machine and Yelp, we made our way to Picasso Cafe in the Paseo District on a blustery morning. We were greeted with artsy/hipster/granola vibes and some seriously fresh food items featuring locally sourced ingredients.
Cowboy Up
We made our way to The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum on a windy cold Saturday. This museum was so interesting! I am not a huge western art fan, but this was such a quality museum that it had me giddy-upping with the best of them.
From the website:
America’s West, with its unique blend of cultures, open terrains, and awesome vistas, is a source of inspiration around the world. We invite you to come and experience the West with us as we explore it through its people, places, and history. The dramatic story of the West led to the establishment of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and we are committed to bringing those stories to you.
Spencer now has a soft spot for the mighty buffalo and a strong desire to buy a cowboy hat.
Remember
The Oklahoma City National Memorial is a beautiful tribute to those who lost their lives.
There are chairs representing each person; the smaller ones are for the children. One oak tree survived the destruction.
Part of the mission statement of this Memorial states:
May all who leave here know the impact of violence.

Have you ever been on a vacation when the main point of the trip was upended? Did you make the best of it or did it ruin your whole experience?
