I love getting book mail at home, but I am sincerely looking forward to the day I can once again browse freely and safely at a bookstore.
Savannah, Georgia
E. Shaver's is quirky, independent, and sells many wonderful unique items. They also host a monthly book club (via Zoom during this crazy Covid time) with fun themes (this month is Tequila Mockingbird) and they have a solid collection featuring local authors.
St. Petersburg, Florida
This city was my hometown for many years. Haslam's Book Store is a St. Pete classic. On my way home from the schoolhouse, I would often stop at this old time bookstore. There was nothing fancy about it, and I loved that aspect of this venue. It has been around since 1933, and it feels like it. They are always having local authors come in for book signings, I still have a signed Tim Dorsey in my library.
Denver, Colorado
My Bestie in the Mile High City also happens to be a bibliophile. Many moons ago, she introduced me to Tattered Cover. There are several locations, but the one on Colfax is the stuff of dreams. This place defines the word 'extensive', and every corner contains quality books and bookish items. I could spend a full day in this place.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Rarely do I ever spend time away from my sweet husband. When we are on vacation, especially, we stick like glue together.
There has been one exception, and it ended with me finding my favorite bookstore in the whole world.
Edinburgh has so many attractions. Spencer really wanted to visit the Surgeons' Hall Museums. A quick Google search offered way too many pictures of things in jars, and I started to have palpitations just thinking about it. So, The Doc went to peruse the yucks, and I went to find a cappuccino. Instead, I happened upon Blackwell's. I whiled away a lovely afternoon. I had a book buying blackout, I think I came home with nine books from that glorious place.
Do you have a favorite independent bookstore? If you don't, maybe you could order some books from one of these places to help keep them going during this unprecedented time.
I have been to the very lovely E.Shaver’s in Savannah, but not to any of your other favourites. I have many favourites, too...almost any store I go into, in fact! 🤣 But, Shakespeare and Company in Paris, Munro’s in Victoria, B.C., Hatchard‘s in London, and the whole town of Hay-on-Wye in Wales, famous for being a ‘book town,’ would be at the top of my list. I hope you get a chance to see them, and more, once we can all travel again.
