I just came home from an epic trip to Great Britain. There is way too much to cover in one shot, so I'll be breaking it up into several posts over the next week.
First up: Fine Dining in the UK!
Bring on the Champagne
I was probably most excited about visiting Bob Bob Ricard in London. (Apparently Bob put up 2/3 of the cash, and Ricard added 1/3, so I loved these guys already.) The menu is "Russian-inspired Modern British." The restaurant itself boasts all booths, a dress code, Vodka shots at -18 C, and no kids under 13. Most importantly, each booth contains a button that simply states, "Press for Champagne."
This place is straight out of my dreams! We tried caviar for the first time, and we have decided that we need monogrammed plates and napkins at home.
Bring on the Romance
Architectural Digest named London's Clos Maggiore the Most Romantic Restaurant in the World. That sounds exactly like the perfect place for Spencer and me, as we always say we are living a non-fiction fairy tale.
The ambiance is indeed steeped in romance. We sat in the conservatory (best to request this room well in advance, as there are only a handful of tables). The ceiling is adorned with fairy lights and cherry blossoms, and a roof that retracts in pleasurable weather. The service was spot-on and the cozy tables made for perfect sharing and hand holding.
Pro Tip: This place (along with many others in the area) offer post and pre-theater menus. The selection is good, the amount of food is perfect, and the cost is much more reasonable than ordering à la carte .
Bring on the Michelin Stars
The Doc and I are definitely foodies. It is a bit shocking that we have not eaten at a Michelin Star restaurant before this trip. In Edinburgh, we stayed at The Balmoral. This historic, lovely hotel boasts many amenities and number one. This restaurant exceeded all of our food loving expectations.
The cuisine here is modern Scottish. We opted to try the tasting menu. There were over ten courses; some small bites, some larger plates, and each beautifully presented, plated, and explained.
This was the best meal we have ever had. Spencer's favorites were the oyster and the foie gras, I loved the scallop and the lamb.
Bring on the Bubbles
We had no plans for our final day in London. It was serendipitous that we stumbled upon Cakes & Bubbles at the end of the day. Located in the heart of Piccadilly Circus, this fancy pants venue focuses on two things: desserts (created by Albert Adrià, an award winning pastry chef) and champagne. We got a table for two by the window, people watched, and gave a cheers to the trip of a lifetime.
Do you like to eat 'fancy' meals? Have you been to an award winning restaurant?
