I absolutely love going to the movies. P.S. (Pre-Spencer!) I would go to the show all the time by myself. Occasionally I could talk a friend into going or there would be a random date from time to time, but mostly I went solo. I absolutely loved the summer movie season; being a teacher, I had summers off. I would go to the theater first thing in the morning, grab some popcorn, and settle in. One of the myriad things that binds us together is that Spencer loves going to the movies too. Here are four memorable movie experiences.
Roll the film!
Epic
I started thinking about this post last Sunday. We stayed in Gainesville, Florida for the night. There is a brand new movie theater that we enjoy going to from time to time. We (along with everyone else in the free world) were dying to see Endgame, the final installment in the Avengers series. It was pretty great, albeit a bit long at three hours. What makes this an epic movie night? After the movie we walked to our hotel and proceeded to watch Game of Thrones, The Long Night. Avengers? Arya badassing in the best possible way? We will remember this night for a long time to come.
Birthday Gal
One year, when we lived in Brookhaven, Spencer planned a birthday filled with all of my favorite things. We had a couples' massage, dinner at Capital Grille, and took in a movie at Cinebistro. We ended up seeing Deadpool, which now ranks in my top five movie list of all time. I love that he spoils me.
Meat Wasted
On another birthday (let it be known that I always hated my birthday P.S.) we went to Miami. We went to UNC/Miami hoops game then to a Brazilian steakhouse, where we ate all of the animals. That night, we ended up at another Cinebistro, where we saw Silver Linings Playbook. That movie is also now in my top five, and it also contains my favorite movie scene of all time.
Residency Break
During residency, Docs take on a new assignment at the beginning of every month. Some months were regular hospital medicine months, some would be with a specialist, and some would be at varying locations. Every month was a new experience. We would always go to dinner at the end of every month and celebrate survival. Often times we would look back at the completed month, discuss key points, then look forward to the next challenge. We are also a couple of organizational freaks who love to make lists.
When ranking the months from easiest to hardest, there was definitely a clear winner for the Worst Month Ever of residency.
December, 2015.
I still cringe to think about it.
I was still teaching, and everyone know how elementary school kids are around the holidays. I was trying to keep up with Christmas tasks, and Spencer was working at the VA. He was getting up at 4, going to work at 7, and often times not coming home until after 9. I would make him dinner while wearing pajamas, then we would both crash.
It was rough.
During this time, as with most months of residency, The Doc had one day off per week. During that first year, when he was still learning the ropes, we never knew when it was coming. (During PGY2 and 3, he was often tasked with making the schedule, which was obviously much nicer.) He could have a Monday off and then not be off until the following Friday. That year, I made it through until my Christmas break. I had survived all of the fun and I was teacher tired. It was ten o'clock at night when Spencer called on his way home.
"Honey. They said I could have a bonus day off tomorrow. Buy the Star Wars tickets."
I cried for a good 15 minutes. Not only because he got the day off, but we were dying to see The Force Awakens. We are both huge Star Wars geeks. My Dad and Step Mother saw Star Wars on their first date, it is in my blood. Spencer had seen the movies countless times and has boxes upon boxes of figures and toys.
We were at the theater at 9 the next morning, opening weekend. That particular installment ended up being my very favorite Star Wars movie of all time.
