All I ever knew about Augusta is that it is home to that big time golf tourney once a year (The Doc hopes to watch that one day in person). I did not realize that it is basically in South Carolina. We spent a quick 24 hours here and had a surprisingly fun time.
Dinner
The tapas gods smiled upon us when we stumbled upon The Bee's Knees. Besides having a fantastic name, we wound up dining with these fine folks on the eve of their 16th anniversary. There was a special on sangria and we happily ate many tapas. The two best: Kimchi Cheesy Rice Balls and Smoked Gouda Nachos. The plates were fairly big for tapas, so don't order too many!
Pottery
I am beyond lucky that my husband is game for any type of date night activity. Neither one of us is artistically inclined, but it is fun to go through the process. We painted a few pieces at Artsy Me. The process was simple: Pick a piece, pick some paint, go to town.
As this was our first foray into the world of pottery, we didn't know that the firing of the kiln would not be an immediate thing. As I mentioned, we were in Augusta for just under 24 hours. So we arranged to have our items shipped. We paid for everything and hoped for the best. Long story short? It took many phone calls and many, many weeks to receive our items. I would definitely try pottery again, maybe next time closer to home.
Dessert
The Boll Weevil Cafe (next to Augusta's surprisingly fantastic River Walk) had the best desserts I have had in a long time, and that is saying a lot. I still have dreams about that Strawberry Cake.
Sandwiches
The Doc and I decided the best meals we had were the random little unplanned lunches, not the fancy dinners. One of the best places from the whole trip was Hildebrandt's. We were looking for a quick bite before we took a tour of Woodrow Wilson's childhood home. This restaurant's motto: Part German, Part South, All Welcome. It was established in 1879! Every employee we talked to was so friendly and the food was simple and crazy good. When my husband ordered the Sweet Heat Louis, the waiter said and emphatic, "YES!" a la Napoleon Dynamite, and that just made the whole experience perfect.
